president joe biden attending rallies in florida and bill clinton is in iowa for the obama campaign, of course. let's bring in the political panel. david goodfriend and rachel smelkin. thank you both for your time. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> i want to get to this poll showing the president still holding on to his lead in ohio, florida and virginia. we know that when you look at national polls, depending on which one, a different picture but it is about the battlegrounds and likely voters here. what do we make of the new polls? >> hurricane sandy introduced a massive unknown in to the final days of the race and that's the first thing. we are not yet seeing that reflikted in the polling. having said that, it looks for the president's team like they're still holding on in ohio. the margins closed there as in other battleground states but that's an all-important state for both campaigns to win this election, mitt romney is almost going to have to win ohio if not he's going to have to run the table everywhere else. this is a good piece of news for the president out of ohio today. vir
. i seem to get an e-mail from barack obama, michelle, joe biden has been texting me lately. there's no escape. another interesting thing, margaret, is i got an unsolicited anti-obama text message from an anonymous source and lots of people in the washington area got there. mine said "seniors can't afford tour four more years of obama budget cuts to medicare." that's arguable, they're not really cuts, but point is you don't know where it's coming from. a virginia company is behind it. its conservative clients are distancing themselvess from having anything to do with these anonymous text messages. >> warner: are the campaigns themselves using these methods to get out negative messages at this stage or are they all positive? >> they are not all positive by any means. the campaigns have web site which is n which president obama's people attack mitt romney and vice versa. so it's a mix of trying to identify your supporters and get them to register, get them to tell their friends, get them to tell people on facebook and also driving negative messages, sometimings snarky twitter-type me
this... that's what this agency does. >> woodruff: meanwhile, vice inresident joe biden spent the day in iowa, where he attacked ryan's budget plan. >> look, ryan saying that his budget doesn't cut-- it just slows-- is a little like romney standing in an unemployment line and saying to the unemployed guy, look, i want to make it clear to you: i didn't outsource your job; i just offshored your job. >> woodruff: in fact, today the candidates, their running mates, spouses and surrogates blanketed seven toss-up states around the country. former president bill clinton has hit the trail hard, appearing today in wisconsin and ohio on behalf of the president. >> but i am far more enthusiastic four years ago. >> woodruff: clinton was in minesota earlier in the week, where the romney campaign recently announced a new ad buy. it's a place both sides had earlier assumed would belong to the democrats. the obama camp countered with a new ad featuring the endorsement of former secretary of state colin powell, ran it there and in nine other states. >> i think we ought to keep on the track that we're
.s. production to china. and joe biden accused romney of lying and causing panic among autoworkers in ohio. >> thousands of them are calling their uaw reps, "is it true, is it true? is jeep really going to leave? is the announcement they made not true? are they going to shut down our plant?" what a cynical, cynical thing to do. >> reporter: but the romney campaign does see some positive signs out there, especially in pennsylvania, minnesota and michigan. three states that have been considered solidly democratic, but where the obama campaign is now suddenly playing defense, spending more than $1 million on tv ads for the final week. diane? >> also on the campaign trail, jonathan karl. thank you, jon. >>> and coming up here next, flammable gas leaking and it's not just a danger in the storm zone. look. our experiment tonight on this invisible threat. hi, i just switched jobs, and i want to roll over my old 401(k) into a fidelity ira. man: okay, no problem. it's easy to get started; i can help you with the paperwork. um...this green line just appeared on my floor. yeah, that's fidelity helpin

. gerri: and the left out swinging today claiming the ad is inaccurate, including joe biden who called it flagrantly dishonest. my next guest says romney has it right. here to explain, associate fellow for the national legal and policy center. great to have you back. always a pleasure to have you on the show. this all came out of a report in bloomberg. let me read you what the road and read your response. european sales, the ceos, sergio marchini, considering building chrysler models in italy, including jeeps, for export to north america. now, is that true or is that false? >> that is absolutely true, and prior to that there was a bloomberg report that did say that the yacht was going to be building jeeps in china, possibly old jeeps, so that is where the governor romney got that information. now, there was one slight inaccuracies under the romney and where he said the obama administration sold chrysler to the italians. he didn't. he gave it to them. the only thing they paid up front was some technology they transferred. did not even pay any money for it. gerri: you're saying possibly
to be out on the campaign trail doing so in iowa. congressman paul ryan in wisconsin. vice president joe biden and governor mitt romney, they're going to be taking to the south in florida. now, romney is in tampa where he's going to kick off a campaign event this hour. we'll keep our eyes posted on that for you. there we see senator marco rubio at that point. i want to bring in msnbc contributor joanne reid and chip saltzman. let's get to it. the optics, joanne, talking about what we're going to see today with chris christie and the president out on the -- surveying watch together. it's really interesting to think of an odd couple, these guys together. christie seeming to be the president's new best friend. let's listen to the comments that christie has made over the last week. >> the president has been outstanding in this. the president has been all over this and he deserves great credit. he's been incredibly supportive and helpful to our state and not once did he bring up the election. >> all right, so let's talk about this. chris christie, a new bff to the president. big difference, b
is in florida, so's joe biden and paul ryan in wisconsin. all trying to squeeze out every vote possible in these key battlegrounds but on november 7th will the loser blame sandy for the loss? howard fineman with "the huffington post" media group is here. i have to start with chris christie. who would have imagined that a week out from election day he would be out singing the president's praised in very strong language? we have a clip of that right now. >> the spth all over this and deserves great credit. i appreciate that call from the president. very proactive and i appreciate that type of leadership. the president's been great. i spoke to him three times yesterday. he called me midnight last night. good working with the president. >> so look, i do think he's sincere here and been very emotionally moved after surveying the damage in new jersey but not only is his praise sort of politically good for the president but politically good for chris christie. >> there's no question that it does. chris christie's job to get all the resources possible from the federal government, from anybody w
will always ensure that disaster funding is there for those in need, period." period? vice president joe biden was campaigning also in the sunshine state today. president obama returns to the campaign trail tomorrow. he plans to barnstorm seven battleground states over the next several days. but today, we did not see politics in action. what we saw was government in action. people with authority to make decisions. chris christie is not the first person, i think, that you would think of when you come to the, you know, arena of bipartisan cooperation. he is a mitt romney supporter and a fierce opponent of many democratic issues. for whatever reason, we saw a different chris christie with president obama today. this is what cooperation looks like. when the american people need government to work, these two elected officials became leaders, and are in lockstep with each other. about time, isn't it? things are getting done. so many politicians run for office saying that they are going to reach across the aisle when they get to washington, and they're going to get things done when they get elected.
there was some disapointment had he didn't wipe joe biden in their debate. i think there's also been disappointment that he hasn't been able to get into specifics of budgeting which is what he's known for and he's had to toe the very generic, vague, nonspecific politiciany romney line. how do you think that his reputation has fared through this campaign? >> well, for the reasons that you say, it hasn't been ideal for him. my prediction, which is not an assessment of paul ryan's character, just human nature and what happens in politics is that if they lose, the ryan camp is going to say, you know, he was being a good soldier. he was muzzled. we didn't necessarily agree with the strategy. we wanted to let paul be paul. we wanted to unleash him. he wanted to do more powerpoints. he wanted to talk more detail and policy. he wanted to take all the time to fox news to explain the details of the tax plan, but the campaign wouldn't let him. that would be my guess. and i think that he has a lot of good will in the republican party, particularly in the conservative base. he can probably get aw

, of course, surrogates such as bill clinton, joe biden, paul ryan and marco rubio will be fanned out across the country in these closing days of the campaign. >> mark, thank you. >>> at the bottom of the hour, we'll get analysis of the final days from our political experts in residence, cnn contributor ana navarro and rick sack re socarides and live coverage will begin at 6:00 p.m. eastern time. >> five days to go. >>> surveying the damage, president obama gets a firsthand look at the devastation caused by sandy in new jersey. we'll take you live to belmar right on the jersey shore. states today, nevada, and colorado as well before heading to ohio tonight. vice president joe biden is in iowa. first lady michelle obama is in florida. meanwhile governor romney is in virginia. his running mate congressman paul ryan is making the round in colorado and nevada. his wife, ann romney is campaigning in ohio and his son tag romney is in pennsylvania. fox news has a brand-new national poll that shows the obama biden ticket tied with the romney ryan ticket at 46% among likely voters. the latest "real clear politics" national polling average also shows a tie 47.4 each. let's go to the man with his crystal ball, larry sabato director for the center of politics at the university of virginia. larry graze into that crystal ball and tell us who wins. >> yeah, the popular vote is very, very close, and the election stoerl college vote i theee electoral college vote will not be a landslide for either of the candidates. we are working on the final projection. obama is closer to 270 than governor romney, but there are a lot of these swing states, the very same ones we've been watchin
feel the same way. megyn: it reminds me of that "saturday night live" skit about joe biden. scranton, pennsylvania, i love it, it's hell on earth. the messaging is conflicting and there is a question about whether barack obama can sell. mitt romney is a good guy. we are all good. but i have the better messaging, vam buyer, vulture, outsourcing. >> tax cheat. this guy is a bser in "rolling stone." now the campaign goes we are going to have barack obama affirm people's beliefs that we are doing better. we'll have an affirmative viewpoint and make every one love one another. remember those words hope and change? they are trying to use every word they can that's almost hope and almost change without using it. his own campaign staff, they are just nailing mitt romney with every negative thing they can possibly do right now in the swing states. even on their own twitter accounts as the campaign is claiming we are going to bring people together and all love each other. i don't bite for a second. megyn: we -- i and a most of my viewers are political no advises. we haven't worked on campaigns
poll shows a dead heat. and 49% of the independents go for president obama and joe biden, 47% go for governor romney and paul ryan. moderate voters who tend to live in the suburbs, many of them independents, 60% for the president to 38% for governor romney. if you're looking at this poll and thinking what is governor romney need to improve on in the final days? he probably needs to boost his numbers with independents if he wants to get over the top. i can tell you in talking and e-mailing with both campaigns today, wolf, they agree with our numbers. they would have it more of an exact tie as oppose today a statistical tie. that's why the candidates are back here so often. they view colorado as a dead heat and both need the nine electoral votes here. if you look at the path to 270, colorado would help both candidates greatly get to the finish line. >> as close as it appears to be, could be a long night counting the votes in colorado. john, thanks very much. a number of other swing state polls from other news organizations also show a very, very tight race. our chief political anal
